Health Teachings

Providing health teaching to a patient suffering from AIWS would vary depending on the underlying condition.

Such related conditions include : migraine & seizure.

For patients who suffer migraine problems,

Abortive medications ranging from nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs), acetaminophen, and triptans may be prescribed. In case of a refractory problem, migraine prophylaxis may be initiated. General information related to migraine medication(this would include all the drawbacks/side effects) and prophylaxis must then be taught to the patient in perfect clarity.

For seizure problems, patients must be advised and taught to diligently take seizure-prescribed medicine exactly as directed. Skipping doses can be lethal, it could potentially worsen the progress of the disease, thus leading to more detrimental consequences.

Drinking substances such as alcohol can yield negative effects as well. Therefore it must be abstained as much as possible. Prophylaxis for injury would include : protecting the head always by wearing helmet during any sport or activity, clearing the area of any obstacles, avoidance of hazardous activities such as mountain climbing or scuba diving.

For children infected by EBV, which is the most common causative agent of AIWS in children, parents must be sufficiently taught about the medications that will be prescribed and what actions to take.

The best treatment for mononucleosis(EBV infection) is plenty of rest and fluids, especially early in the illness when symptoms are most severe. There is no specific medicine for mono, but acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help to relieve fever and aching muscles. Antibiotics will not help, because they're only effective against bacteria. Someone with mono who takes an antibiotic often ends up getting a rash.

These are just a few sample of methods that may be initiated for patients with AIWS.  Since the said disorder has currently no specific treatment, the only way to manage this is to treat the underlying condition behind it. This can vary from person to person depending on how they trigger their AIWS attacks(the causal factor).

There are still a plethora of AIWS etiological agents out there that we still know nothing about, and it is already beyond the scope of the references that were incorporated here.
